Drawing from an object

Thinking about making different marks while drawing from an object in front of me make me think about how I don't have to just draw what I see in front of me. These drawings also made me realise that I need to play around with contrast and shading more and I need to work on not being too scared to press the pencil harder onto the page. Drawing within a short time frame isn't something I've done before so made me think differently and I realised that proportion and details don't always shave to be accurate depending what style of art you use.

I don't think drawing without looking is something I'll try again but the marks I made were interesting and it made me press harder onto the page.

Adding a background to my drawing gave the drawing a darker tone which I thought looked quite interesting and it gave my drawing more of a story. Drawing with biro gave my drawings a lot more contrast although if I were to use it on a piece I think I would have to practice using it a lot more.

Mark-Making with Graphite

Naomi Lister- Untitled

 -Mixed media on paper

My Piece

I was a lot more confident with making different marks this time around and enjoyed using graphite to make different marks as opposed to coloured pencils. I like the outcome of this piece a lot more than my other one. I started off with fainter lines but then worked into it more to create more contrast.I feel like i had more contrast before applying paint so if i were to do this again i'd either apply less paint or think about where i'm putting the paint more. Because i didn't have a brush it was a lot harder to place paint where i wanted it and ended up covering up things that i didn't want to cover up.

Inspiration

These are the photos I used to create the piece above. I chose these photos because they all have words or marks in that i could easily recreate.

Mark Making

Cy Twombly

Looking at Cy Twombly's art style, I like how expressive with his mark making and how he uses different layers to add more interest with his art. I also like how experimental he is with the different types of marks he makes.

Cy's inspiration comes from his home in Rome,Italy. He was inspired by Greek and Roman mythology but also graffiti on local walls. In his art he balances these different aspects together. The layers he creates represents the layers of time. His other inspirations come from poetry and this shows as he includes words and quotes in a lot of his pieces.

Experimenting with mark making

I enjoyed experimenting with marks. although i don't like the end result of my piece I still enjoyed the process of making it and it made me think about how i can use different marks to create different effects. It also made me think about how art doesn't have to be a specific drawing of something, it can be words or different marks too.

First Week Reflective Diary

My induction task helped me find styles of art I enjoy and made me think about what sort of things I enjoy drawing. I started off by drawing a lot of portraits of people but then also drew pictures of animals which I found I enjoyed a lot more. If I were to continue to develop my induction task I would venture into drawing different types of animals instead of portraits and I’d like to continue mixing realism with a cartoonish style as I did near the end of the task. My main inspiration has been Vince Okerman.

The course is different than what I have been used to before as I don’t have to be limited to a pencil and paint. It’s also different as instead of drawing aesthetically pleasing drawings I could now potentially make something that has more meaning behind it. I now also don’t have to be limited to carrying out my teacher’s ideas and instead can use my own ideas.

I will use my blog to upload pieces and annotate them in order to have a space where I can easily look at all of my pieces.
